Britpop in 10 Albums“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK.
Make way for “Cool Britannia”.
45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows in July 2016, part of the year-long tour in support of his No.1 album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600-strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD. The show includes songs from throughout David's career, solo and with Pink Floyd, including 'One Of These Days', the only song that was also performed at the band’s 1971 show, as well as songs from ‘Rattle that Lock’, and 2006’s ‘On An Island’. “Wish You Were Here”, released in September 1975, was the follow up album to the globally successful “The Dark Side Of The Moon” and is cited by many fans, as well as band members Richard Wright and David Gilmour, as their favorite Pink Floyd album. On release it went straight to Number One in both the UK and the US and topped the charts in many other countries around the world. This program tells the story of the making of this landmark release through new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason and archive interviews with the late Richard Wright. Also featured are sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson, guest vocalist Roy Harper, front cover “burning man” Ronnie Rondell and others involved in the creation of the album.
In addition, original recording engineer Brian Humphries revisits the master tapes at Abbey Road Studios to illustrate aspects of the songs’ construction. The Electric Light Orchestra, led by one of rock's most iconic songwriters and producers Jeff Lynne, are one of the most successful British bands of all time with global sales of over 50 million albums.
In September 2014, Jeff Lynne's ELO headlined BBC Radio 2's Festival In A Day in London's famous Hyde Park. It was the first time in almost 30 years that the band had performed on a festival stage. The 50,000 tickets for the event had sold out in a matter of minutes and the fans sang along to hit after hit performed by Jeff Lynne and the band accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' Classic Album is the creative story behind the masterpiece: 'Dark Side Of The Moon'. 'Dark Side Of The Moon' transformed Pink Floyd from art house favorites to global, stadium superstars. Prior to 1973, Pink Floyd maintained a relentless gigging schedule and by the time they came to record 'Dark Side Of The Moon' had already created many of the basic tracks. 'Dark Side Of The Moon' would be the first Pink Floyd (post Syd Barrett) album where Roger Waters would supply all the lyrics around a concept: The Circle of Life.
With the timeless qualities of its production and musicality, allied to the hypnotic evocation of its central themes - alienation, paranoia, madness, war and death, 'Dark Side Of The Moon' would become the album that would dominate the 70's and 80's (with a record number of 741 consecutive weeks in the Billboard 200). This program takes an in depth look at the making of the 1973 album. All four members of the band Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright are featured in exclusive interviews. Roger, David and Richard play songs and demonstrate themes from the album. Alan Parsons (the original engineer) takes you through the multi track tapes giving a unique insight into the musical fabric of the record and the program is illustrated throughout with archive footage. 'Dark Side Of The Moon' with its combination of great songs, inventive effects and one of the best known sleeves ever, tapped into the world's collective subconscious and became a landmark in Rock history and a truly Classic Album.
'A Technicolor Dream' is the story of the underground movement during the Sixties leading up to its culmination at The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, a 'musical happening' at Alexandra Palace on April 29th, 1967.The story takes in CND marches in the early Sixties, the foundation of the London Free School and the Notting Hill Carnival. There are brand new interviews with Roger Waters and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd, John 'Hoppy' Hopkins, Joe Boyd, Kevin Ayers, Barry Miles, Phil May from The Pretty Things and many more. This fascinating programme is set in a musical context with the music of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd and The Pretty Things. This live recording comprises 15 songs captured during 'The Book Of Souls World Tour,' which covered 39 countries across six continents during 2016 and 2017, and was seen by over two million fans. Produced by Tony Newton and Iron Maiden founder member and bass player Steve Harris, the album is based on this year's set list and is a faithful record of the epic show, including six songs from 'The Book Of Souls,' the band's most recent studio album, along with many other classics and fan favourites. In November 1981, with 'Under Pressure' topping the charts in the UK, Queen arrived in Montreal following dates in Japan and their record-breaking tour of Latin America.
It was to be the only concert by Queen that was ever shot on film. Always a great live band, with arguably the greatest frontman of all time in Freddie Mercury, they excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The picture has been digitally restored from the original film.
It is, however, not the only live Queen concert on film. Also on Qello Concerts, watch Freddie Mercury and Queen Live at Wembley Stadium, and Live at the Bowl in Queen on Fire. 30 years after the release of his multi-platinum selling album, Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani searches for the next step in his career. 'Beyond the Supernova' is a tour documentary that offers a glimpse into the mind of the guitarist. Join Satriani while he performs music from Shockwave Supernova through Asia and Europe as he looks back on his career.
We learn of the autobiographical concept behind the record and how it plays into determining Joe Satriani's next creative step. We'll also go behind the scenes of the Surfing To Shockwave World Tour featuring performances from Joe, Mike Keneally, Bryan Beller and Marco Minnemann, as well as cameo appearances by guitarists Steve Vai and Guthrie Govan. Filmed at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Japan on April 9th 2014, these Japanese dates were the first to feature Jeff Beck’s new backing band of Jonathan Joseph (drums), Nicolas Meier (guitars) and Rhonda Smith (bass). The setlist includes some freshly minted songs that fans will never have heard before. In contrast to Beck’s previous visual releases, Performing This WeekLive At Ronnie Scott’s and Rock ‘N’ Roll Party, which both filmed in small clubs, Live In Tokyo is filmed in a major concert arena and has a very different, more expansive feel. The Moody Blues were formed in Birmingham in the early sixties and were immediately successful, going to No.1 with their second single Go Now. As the sixties progressed, their music evolved into a more lush, psychedelic sound, and with the arrival of Justin Hayward and John Lodge, the classic line-up came together and produced the masterpiece Days Of Future Passed, which contained their classic hit singles Nights In White Satin and Tuesday Afternoon.
The resulting level of success propelled the band forward. This show from July 1991 is the band's only Montreux appearance to date. With a line-up including John Lodge, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, and Graeme Edge, the exceptional performance includes classics such as Gemini Dream, Question, Isn't Life Strange, I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band), Your Wildest Dreams and of course, Nights In White Satin. This documentary recorded in 1977, is a rare film, originally a cinemato life on the road during BJH’s most successful period. Including rarepre-concert sound checks.
Barclay James Harvest formed in the summer of 1967. From the very outset the band pioneered and experimented with new forms, going beyond the traditional guitar, bass and drums format to include woodwind, strings and brass, then acquiring a Mellotron to simulate the sound of an orchestra. Throughout the seventies the band continued to develop chart-topping albums and were capable of filling stadiums and arenas throughout Europe.
This spectacular 94-minute concert was recorded live with the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra in 1975, at the Sydney Myer Concert Bowl in Melbourne Australia to a 30,000 audience. This mammoth sell-out concert to tens of thousands was at the end of the 'Journey Tour' to promote the album 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', which sold over 12,000,000 copies worldwide. The concert opens with the greatest hits from Rick's biggest selling album The Six Wives of Henry VIII, followed by the complete 'Journey' and also includes hits from his then-new album King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. This is classic Rick Wakeman, one of the world's finest keyboard players, at the very pinnacle of his legendary progressive rock career. The 30-year history of Wishbone Ash has hardly been smooth, with numerous personnel changes and gradually fading popularity since the band's most acclaimed album, Argus, was released in 1972. What you'll witness here, then, is an inspiring and altogether good-natured example of survival embodied by original Wishbone guitarist Andy Powell. Looking youthful at 50, his formerly long hair now shaved off altogether, Powell remains a virtuoso ax-man, matched by fellow ace Mark Birch (temporarily filling the shoes of the departed Ted Turner) to recreate Wishbone's signature twin-guitar sound. As the sole survivor of Wishbone's original lineup, Powell happily presides over the group's considerable legacy, epitomized here by outstanding performances of the Ash classics 'Phoenix' and 'Blowin' Free.'
The concert's a no-frills affair with an occasionally uneven mix, but the music comes through with clarity and gusto, reminding us that Wishbone Ash's unique blend of musicianship remains influential some three decades later. Beacon Theatre Live from New York rips through 20 songs spanning Bonamassa's career with smoky vocals complementing the guitar wizardry and rapid-fingered ease with which his fans know and love. Alongside the great chemistry he shares with his formidable bandmates Carmine Rojas (bass), Tal Bergman (drums) and Rick Melick (keyboards), the performance is mesmerizing to watch. He kicks it off with Slow Train, from 2011's solo album Dust Bowl and rolls through a number of fan-favorites including: Cradle Song, Dust Bowl, When The Fire Hits The Sea, Bird On A Wire, Blue & Evil, Mountain Time, and many more. Knebworth, Hertfordshire, June 30, 1990. 120,000 fansgathered for an historic concert event to aid the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre and the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.
This incredible benefit concert was an instant success due to the high-energy, awe-inspiring performances of such rock 'n' roll legends as Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Status Quo, Tears For Fears and Cliff Richard & The Shadows. In 1962 four young men - John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - came together to form the 20th century musical phenomenon known as 'The Beatles'. The band stormed Europe in 1963 and, in 1964, they conquered America.
Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However, the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame (which in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil) led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar winner, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this?
How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there? 'TIME MACHINE 2011: Live In Cleveland' is an evening with Rush performing their classic hits and features the legendary 'Moving Pictures' album, performed live in its entirety. Released in 1981, 'Moving Pictures' is their most successful album, certified 4x Platinum, and features some of the band's most well known songs and perennial radio favorites, including “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight” and the Grammy®-nominated instrumental “YYZ.” Captured in April, 2011 in Cleveland during the renowned trio’s extensive world tour, 'TIME MACHINE 2011: Live In Cleveland' marks the band’s first live concert filmed in the United States.
The choice to record in Cleveland was a deliberate nod of gratitude to the first city to support Rush on its airwaves, as former WMMS DJ Donna Halper is widely credited for helping break the band in 1974 by spinning “Working Man.” The reinterpreted live version of “Working Man” was the encore closer on the Time Machine tour and is included on this release. In addition to the 26-song concert set, Rush’s notorious concept tour videos are included: The first short film, entitled “The ‘Real’ History of Rush Episode No. 2 ‘Don’t Be Rash,’” and the opening second set video, 'The ‘Real’ History of Rush Episode No. 17 ‘.and Rock and Roll is My Name.' Aerosmith Rocks Donington is much more than just a great gig.
It is a lasting document of the powerful and explosive bond that these five men - Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, and Joey Kramer - have made with each other and with fans of rock 'n' roll everywhere. The film captures Aerosmith headlining the massive Download Festival at Donington Park with all their attitude and talent-drenched beauty as they deliver a blistering set of their greatest hits. It is a true once-in-a-lifetime rock 'n' roll experience to treasure and remember forever. History rocked and rock made history during a sold-out three-gig stand at Madison Square Garden in late February 2008 when icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed a concert together for the first time since their all-too-brief days in the legendary Blind Faith in 1969.
Whether they will ever team again is unknown. But with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live From Madison Square Garden fans everywhere are able to experience the sound and the glory of a performance on that famous stage by two of rock's greatest artists. The two and half hour concert film audio recordings feature over 20 once-in-a-lifetime performances honoring Jerry Garcia.
Performers include Phil Lesh & Communion, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann's Billy & the Kids, Mickey Hart, Eric Church, Jimmy Cliff, The Disco Biscuits, Peter Frampton, David Grisman, Jorma Kaukonen, Los Lobos, Buddy Miller, Moe., O.A.R., Grace Potter, Allen Toussaint, Trampled By Turtles, Widespread Panic, and Yonder Mountain String Band. Produced by Blackbird Presents blackbirdpresents.com. Freddie Mercury was one of the most charismatic, complex and fascinating characters in rock music.
The story of Queen is a well known one but this new film focuses on Freddie Mercury and the solo projects he worked on outside of Queen. Using extensive archive footage of interviews with Freddie Mercury, concerts, video shoots and personal material, much of it previously unseen, along with new interviews with friends and colleagues, a portrait emerges of a man who was very different to his flamboyant onstage public persona. A generous, caring, thoughtful man with a self-deprecating sense of humor and a genuine passion for music.
Freddie Mercury touched the lives of millions through his career both with Queen and as a solo performer and this new film will delight and inform his legions of fans.
